Clothing
Clothing was simple but was made from strong material. Men wore long-sleeved flannel shirts with a woolen undershirt. The wool or cotton pants or in those days, trousers, gave protection from the sun, rain and sudden change of temperatures. Women wore skirts or dresses made of calico (a cotton cloth) designed with gingham striped or checks with flowers in different colors.
Each person had strong sturdy shoes and a hat or bonnet. If they needed to, the pioneers would trade with the Indians for moccasins.
Bandanna handkerchiefs worn over the mouth, at times, protected the pioneers from dust and cold.
